-

3 Exercises to develop a multi-layered fill which incorporates all four limbs.
-
Linear Grooves
One thing at a time, an interesting concept when playing a groove. We normally tick away on the hihat and align kicks and snares to that, however in linear grooves we can enter new realms of possibility, creativity and speed.
-

Studio Tours
Watch detailed tours and explanations about the what, why and how when it comes to the gear I use, and how it has changed over the years as my work has changed.
-

3D Linear Fills
Linear Drumming, playing one thing at a time, the opposite of non-linear, which is where we may play both hands together, or a Bass Drum and a Crash at the same time. Linear drumming is interesting as by playing one limb at a time when playing fast strings of notes, we dont burn out individual…
-

3D Non-Linear Fills
In this section we explore getting the feet involved within fills in a Non-Linear way (with multiple limbs playing together).

Applied Rudiment Fills
Rudiments, the building blocks of drumming. Take your Stickings like RLRL, or RLRR LRLL, and see their full potential when applied to the kit
-

Grouping Fills
We often play 4’s, 8’s and 16’s on the drums, but our drumming can sound a little flat when the groups of numbers we play become too predictable. With Groupings we can work in numbers like 3, 5 and 7, and resolve them to still work and sound good in a normal musical situation.
-

Rhythmic Fills
These courses are designed to give you a better idea of how to construct fills by better understanding how to manipulate rhythm and move those patterns around the kit. Expect much rhythmic wisdom, as well as pepperoni apple pies… (it will make sense as you go through the courses).
-

Stepped/ Open HiHat Focused Grooves
Get that left foot moving as we explore the possibilities of using the most often ignored limb in drumming.
-

Syncopated Grooves
Complex Ghost and Kick Grooves, exploring the possibilities of the interplay between them in a syncopated environment.
-

Bass Drum Focused Grooves
The Bass/ Kick drum creates the energy in a groove, but it is usually a new drummers first handicap when playing a groove
-

Ghost Note Grooves
Ghost Notes are simply soft notes, which add subtle flavour just like seasoning in food. It’s these things which can make a good groove sound great. Know where to put them, and how to pull them off from a technical perspective when mixed with louder notes.
-

Crash Cymbal Groove Placements
From indicating changes in a song to creating energy, placement within a groove is important when using the Crash.
-

Tom Grooves
Grooves designed for use on the toms, to give that Moody Vibe, or to create maximum power on those bridges.
-

Odd Time Grooves
Odd Time is more about music than it is about math.
-

One Handed 16th HiHat Grooves
When you need that extra speed on the hihat to drive the groove forwards.
-

Shuffle Grooves
When a song has a ‘Bounce’ to it, Shuffles are usually the place to start.
-

Off Beat HiHat Grooves
Playing the HiHat in between 1,2,3,4. Creates some great feeling Grooves!
-

Speed and Control
Speed and Control go hand in hand. Driving a car as fast as you can when you loose control usually does not last very long! Speed often comes with absolute awareness of your movements and being able to mentally hear the notes and control each and every stroke.
-

Dynamics
Loud and Quiet, Hills and Valleys. We only play Rhythm and Dynamics on the drums, and so many drummers don’t even consider developing their dynamics, meaning they miss half of what drumming is all about. Dynamics are the path to true expression behind the drums.
-

Core Hand Technique
Explore the core components of hand technique which make all of drumming possible. Start early with these concepts or revisit them when you can to have a solid foundation of technique.
-

Rudiments
Rudiments are patterns of Rights and Lefts, but more than that each combination has its own musical sound and application. See past the R and L and start to see them as musical tools that you can use.
-

Stick Tricks
There are mixed thoughts on stick tricks. I personally really like them, this is show business after all and the visual aspect of a performance has value, although dont detract from the music and keep the main thing the main thing. I learnt stick tricks because I would be really motivated to practice my drums,…
-

Applied Rudiment Grooves
Take your rudimental tools and put them to work in your grooves!
-

Double Kick Grooves
Imagine only being able to play the snare with one hand… well that is often how we treat the bass drum. With a Double Kick Pedal or two bass drums you can expand your rhythmic horizons.
-

Two Handed HiHat Grooves
So you hear lots of hi-hats in a groove, but you are struggling to play that fast with one hand… move up a gear and bring in two hands to allow for greater speed, but again this can throw off your coordination resulting in basic kick and snare patterns. Explore two handed hi-hat playing, get…
-

6/8 Grooves
Drummers get very good at playing in 4/4, but then wonder why their drumming doesn’t work for some songs, and it’s usually because its in 6/8 or a triplet based time.
-

Straight 8th Grooves
The most common and straight forward environment to develop your drumming, try starting here if you are new to these concepts.
-

2D Permutations
Use the Permutations Grid to help you master every combination of an exercise in these permutations courses.
-

Rhythm and Theory
Drummers are rhythm machines, so naturally building your understanding and control of rhythm is a good investment.
